Chief J.R. Gamez will be accepting the award on behalf of the Redwood City Police Department
Chief JR Gamez has had a dynamic 28-year law enforcement career. He currently serves as the Chief of Police for the Redwood City Police Department and was sworn in on December 2, 2011. The Redwood City Police Department is comprised of 125 sworn and support staff. Redwood City was incorporated in 1867 and spans approximately 19 square miles. It is a richly diverse community with a population of approximately 80,000 residents.
Prior to joining the Redwood City Police Department, JR began his law enforcement career in San Jose, California. The City of San Jose is the 10th largest city in the nation with a population of approximately one million residents. JR served as Commander of the City of San Jose’s Western Division. He supervised over 375 officers assigned to one of the geographically largest divisions in the City. He was responsible for providing police services to over 233,000 residents. Prior to his promotion to Captain, JR served as the Department’s Homicide Commander. He supervised a staff of 28 homicide detectives, CSI Investigators, and administrative personnel. He was the Department representative on Child Death Review Boards/Elder Death Review Boards/Officer Involved Shooting Committees and the Cold Case Review Team.
He also served as the Commander of the Special Operations Division which included oversight of the SWAT, METRO, and Violent Crimes Enforcement Team. JR was also responsible for the oversight of the Air Support Unit and Horse Mounted Unit. He was the Department representative with the Office of Homeland Security.
During his law enforcement career, he was assigned as an undercover Federal Task Force Agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). As a supervisor at the DEA he was the recipient of the DEA Administrators Award.
In 2013, JR was selected as one of Computerworld’s Premier 100 IT Leaders in America, for the Department’s use of social media and innovative video chat technology. The Redwood City Police Department has recently received numerous international, national, and state awards for their use of technology and community engagement strategies.
JR is also a recipient of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Portraits of Success Career Award for exemplary leadership during his law enforcement career. He is also a three-time recipient of the City of San Jose Mayor’s Commendation. He was the recipient of the Richard Huerta Special Merit Award for a Homicide Investigation. He was also a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Duty Award for specific undercover investigations. As the Homicide Commander in San Jose, JR developed the first
Cold Cases webpage prompting community members to offer detectives information on homicide investigations that led to the arrest and prosecution of murder suspects.
His assignments as a Sergeant and Officer have included the Homicide Unit, Missing Persons, Covert Narcotics Investigations, DEA Task Force, and Special Operations.
JR was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Union University for Criminal Justice Management. He is also a graduate of the West Point Leadership Program.
JR is an active member of the Redwood City Rotary Club. He also is a member of Redwood City/San Mateo Chamber of Commerce and Redwood City International.
JR’s hobbies include coaching varsity high school basketball, traveling, and water sports.
